One quarter inch is a good reveal at each level of the closet. If you are making them for a closet assemble it inside the closet. For example if your shelving material is a full 16 inches wide keep the top shelf at that width and rip the supporting partitions to 15 3 4 inches.

If you want deeper closet shelves you ll either need to stack boards together to make it wider or you ll need to buy a large sheet of 4 x 8 plywood and cut out the size you want. Place shelving pieces in the location you want to assemble them. Our top shelves are 40 across the back of the closet.
